While the information in this book might be a good starting point for someone totally new to thyroid disorders, I found it too basic, and too entrenched in mainstream theory and treatments to be helpful. Too much repeating of information easily found on just about any thyroid drug manufacturer's website, or just from surfing around the web. It is not a book I kept for my personal library --which for me (books are life!) is unusual.


For newly diagnosed thyroid patients
This book is a good read for those newly diagnosed to thyroid disease. It offers the basic information on thyroid disease (Are you hyper or hypo, symptoms, medication, etc.) without overwhelming the reader. The author is very precise in her explanations also. For those of you looking for answers to more challenging and complex thyroid problems, this would NOT be the book to buy. It doesn't challenge any of the current practices and assumes that you have a simple problem that one pill will cure.

This book answered all my questions on thyroid cancer, and in EASY to UNDERSTAND language. Dr. Ain has WONDERFUL information he shares with us! And there is everything else a thyroid cancer patient would need to know about hypothyroidism, thyroid hormone, lifestyle issues, etc. So although this is definitely a book for all people with thyroid diseases of any kind, it's especially welcome for us thyroid cancer patients!

A great find for Graves' patients!
I loved this book. I was diagnosed with Graves' disease after my first pregnancy, and there are a lot of things this book explained for me that I never knew, and that my doctors did not explain. I have had problems with my eyes, and I also did not understand radioactive iodine very well. There are a lot of things in this book that anyone with Graves' disease should know. There is a lot of stuff on hypothyroidism and proper treatment and tests that we need to know about that is hard to find elsewhere. I did not realize how much bad information is on the internet until I read this book.


Finally Makes Sense
I'm a middle-aged engineer who knows the difference between "the right stuff" and crap. Nearly all the self-help health books on the rack at Borders were the wrong stuff. They contradicted much of the basic information I'd already pulled out of my own searches and didn't give me sufficient practical detail. This "Complete Thyroid Book" finally let me understand what was going on with my thyroid. It spelled out the issues with my hypothyroid problem and gave me details about my thyroid pills that even educated my pharmacist. I don't usually trust book cover blurbs, but after I googled Ain and Rosenthal the blurbs on this book were understatements. This book is truly "the right stuff".

While this book has some wisdom, it is replete with mini infomercials for Dr. Shame's medical services and those of his wife, and even those of his acupuncturist daughter. For me, a medical doctor who writes a book that sells his cure and services has crossed the line to salesperson. Credibility is lost. There are many more credible resources about thyroid treatment; this book smacks of preying on those hypothyroid sufferers who are not finding relief. Shame on the Shames.

I would like to comment about the author of this wonderful book.

The first thing I would like to say is that Doctor Shames really knows his medicine, and is kind enough to share his very practical knowledge with the general public through the material he writes.

I would like to explain where my knowledge about him comes from. Three years ago, I was bedridden for two months. I did not have the energy to stand up. My general practitioner of 25 years, who I thought knew me like a book, told me the high anxiety and depression I was experiencing along with the severe energy depletion, was only in my mind. She did not know what to do with me. I was stuck in bed thinking I was dying and no one could help me. Then I read Dr. Shames first book, Thyroid Power. He addresses hypothyroid, hyperthyroid and Chronic Fatigue / Fibromyalgia. I was thrilled to see that he addressed the issue of poor converters of T4 to T3, importance of good thyroid supporting nutrients, diet and detoxification. Most doctors will just throw Synthroid at you and call it good without treating the underlying cause. He refers to the importance of iodine and that is covered in his other book "Iodine: Why you need it, Why you can't live without it." That is also an excellent book.
