Most Underlined Buyer Review : Great book on physicians as explorers/inventors!
I am always on the look out for decent books that can be used to teach students about phenomenal lives and mentors. This book accurately fills that need. Most of the physicians in this book were also researchers before scientific research was even a field. Many of these men (they are mostly men) came from backgrounds that were not particularly conducive to doing medicine, let alone the research that they ended up doing. Their families were not aristrocratic or learned, many had fathers who were tradesmen...yet for some reason, they chose to enter fields of medicine. Medicine was not always the prestigious field or career that it is now. Often, it was looked down upon, especially prior to its consolidation as a science. The work that these men did helped to raise the prestige of medicine, anatomy, physiology, and neuroscience.

Medicine, like most sciences, is a long ongoing process of learning. Not just about the body, but about what chemicals and what therapies are going to work...

Goldberger's War: The Life and Work of a Public Health Crusader Details

Goldberger's War chronicles one of the U.S. Public Health Service's most renowned heroes--an immigrant Jew who trained as a doctor at Bellevue, became a young recruit to the federal government's health service, and ended an American plague. He did so by defying conventional wisdom, experimenting on humans, and telling the South precisely what it didn't want to hear.

Most Underlined Buyer Review : A Fine Bio of a True American Hero
Joseph Goldberger is a true American hero. He was a US PHS officer who devoted his life to combating various infectious and communicable diseases. However, his biggest triumph was in determining that pellagra, a disease you never hear of any more but in the 19th and early 20th century took the lives of thousands, was caused by a dietic deficiency not a germ or virus. Pellagra was especially prevalent in the US southeast where poor sharecroppers and mill workers often were the victims. The book is very well written and addresses the medical mysteries and the social barriers to implementing Goldberger's suggestions. Alan Kraut has done a real service in preserivng Godlberg's life and work in the book. I think the book will be enjoyed
by those who like biographies and medical mysteries.

Interesting
Had to read this book for a class in grad school. It provided interesting insight into Goldberger but the tone of the author wasn't very objective

A very good read.
The book is well written, very interesting, and easy for a lay person to understand. If you like to read medical history books and don't remember or know about the achievements of Joseph Goldberger, then you should read this book. The book would be a good Christmas or birthday present.

Good Times in the Hospital: A Medical Memoir Explanation

As the chapters accumulate, the reader begins to realize that doctors are not much different from the rest of us. As for the patients in these stories, although hospitals are engaged in the most serious business imaginable, you cannot find more laugh-out-loud behavior anywhere. This is because when people seek medical care they are vulnerable and reveal their true, inner selves. And, it turns out that the true, inner selves of most people are often some combination of fascinating, inexplicable, and ridiculous. Good Times in the Hospital asserts that it is unhealthy to take life too seriously, and a lighthearted temperament is just as important as a sound diet. This point of view makes it possible for one book to combine a rare glimpse into what goes on inside a hospital, an informative look at health care, and an entertaining collection of unlikely stories, poignant vignettes, and humorous anecdotes. The author says, "If you think it is insensitive to laugh at doctors attending their patients and entertain ourselves with yarns of patients lying in their sickbed, you are reading the wrong book"

Most Underlined Buyer Review : Humor and Humility
I thoroughly enjoyed this medical memoir. But, I have worked in the publishing field, and--in my opinion--what is more important is the judgement of Kirkus Reviews, a highly respected resource in the publishing business. Kirkus Reviews says: "In this absorbing memoir...a wealth of funny, sometimes unnerving anecdotes...an entertaining, illuminating chronicle of medical pratfalls and misadventures...a doctor's reminiscences yield perceptive insights...but, these episodes convey more than perverse yuks and riotous misbehavior. McCully's painfully comical recollections of his own mistakes show the exhaustion, self-doubt and frailty that bedevil doctors beneath their veneer of unflappable expertise. A patient who treats his shingles with the blood of a black rooster prompts a meditation on the human craving for certainty and control, and a luminous remembrance of house calls serves to highlight the physician's role in reassuring people about the verities of life and death. He writes in...

The secret life of doctors
The things I took away after reading this book are that doctors are mortal; they are not perfect; they make mistakes while trying to do the right thing; that they are for the most part dedicated and unselfish; they endure a tortuous route to become an "MD"; their families make sacrifices also; and sometimes they are mystified by symptoms ; and sometimes patients simply get better for no reason. And, that there is a vast difference between hospitals and medical personnel from one to the other. All wrapped in a compilation of humorous anecdotes. Lots of things that most patients have no clue about.

Most Underlined Buyer Review : Inspiration for athletes
I bought this book because Ruth Heidrich is mentioned in the book "Born to Run" by Christopher McDougall. The first three chapters are a little difficult to read through, but hang in there because Ruth Heidrich's story is awe inspiring and gives you hope that getting cancer doesn't mean giving up. Great book for runners and cancer survivors, but a good read for any athlete. She convinced me that you can be vegan and a superior athlete.

She proves to be the best nutrition to perform even as a top athlete.

Great Book if You're Training for a Triathlon
Ruth Heidrich is an incredibly brave, positive, fit human being. She is a breast cancer survivor with an amazing determination to give her disease the best all-out battle she can muster, for every remaining day of her, hopefully very very long, life.

I bought this book to learn about the ways she's taken on her battle with cancer, and to seek to understand some of the psychological and practical challenges she's lived through.

Unfortunately there isn't any huge amount of material in the book on this topic -- there is some at the beginning and some at the end, and a bit sprinkled in-between.

What most of the book is, is a training guide for competitive running, swimming and biking, marathons, super-marathons, triathlons and Iron Man competitions. We even get into the minutiae of repairing bicycles in the middle of races, proper breathing form for swimming and what to do if you are so exhausted 20 miles into a marathon that you feel you simply can't go...

Dr. Folkman's War: Angiogenesis and the Struggle to Defeat Cancer Details

In 1961, twenty-eight-year-old Dr. Judah Folkman saw something while doing medical research in a United

States navy lab that gave him the first glimmering of a wild, inspired hunch. What if cancerous tumors, in order to expand, needed to trigger the growth of new blood vessels to feed themselves? And if that was true, what if a way could be found to stop that growth? Could cancers be starved to death? Dr. Folkman had ample reason to be self confident — second in his class at Harvard Medical School, he was already considered one of the most promising doctors of his generation. But even he never guessed that his idea would eventually grow into a multibillion-dollar industry that is now racing through human trials with drugs that show unparalleled promise of being able to control cancer, as well as other deadly diseases.

For the creation of this book, Dr. Judah Folkman cooperated fully and exclusively with acclaimed science writer Robert Cooke. He granted Cooke unlimited interviews, showed him diaries and personal papers, and threw open the doors of his lab. The result is an astonishingly rich and candid chronicle of one of the most significant medical discoveries of our time and of the man whose vision and persistence almost single-handedly has made it possible.

Dr. Folkman's radical new way of thinking about cancer was once considered preposterous. So little was known about how cancer spreads and how blood vessels grow that he wasn't even taken seriously enough to be considered a heretic. Other doctors shook their heads at the waste of a great mind, and ambitious young medical researchers were told that accepting a position in Folkman's lab would be the death of their careers. Now, though, the overwhelming majority of experts believes that the day will soon come when antiangiogenesis therapy supplants the current more toxic and less-effective treatments — chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery-as the preferred method of treatment for cancer in patients around the world, and Dr. Folkman's breakthrough will come to be taken for granted the way we now take for granted the polio vaccine and antibiotics.

Dr. Folkman's War brilliantly describes how high the odds are against success in medical research, how vicious the competition for grants, how entrenched the skepticism about any genuinely original thinking, how polluted by politics and commerce the process of getting medicine into patients' hands. But it also depicts with rare power how exalted a calling medicine can be and how for the rare few—the brilliant, the tireless, and the lucky — the results of success can be world-changing.Early in 1998, New York Times science reporter and author Gina Kolata happened to be seated at a banquet next to the Nobel Prize-winning scientist James Watson. When Kolata asked Watson what was new in the world of science, he replied, "Judah Folkman and angiogenesis, that's what's new. Judah is going to cure cancer in two years."

Folkman, a longtime physician and medical researcher at Harvard University and Children's Hospital, was caught off guard by the excited news reports that followed Watson's remark, but there was good reason for excitement. For nearly four decades, when not busy doing such things as inventing the heart pacemaker and attending to hundreds of patients, Folkman had been puzzling out a peculiarity of tumors: at some point during their formation, they sent forth chemical signals that in effect "recruited" blood vessels to feed them. If those signals could be intercepted through well-targeted drugs, Folkman reasoned, and the blood supply to cancerous formations thus interrupted, then the tumors themselves might be starved to death, or at least to dormancy.

In this book, Newsday writer Robert Cooke offers an accessible account of Folkman's work on angiogenesis, or the formation of blood vessels, which may well point the way to new treatments for cancer and related illnesses. Following Folkman's roundabout trail, one marked by considerable resistance on the part of doubtful colleagues, readers will gain a sense of how medical research is conducted--and, almost certainly, a sense of wonder at the medical breakthroughs that, as James Watson hinted, are just around the corner. --Gregory McNamee

Most Underlined Buyer Review : A Modern Odyssey of Medical Innovation
This book clearly deserves many more than five stars.

Dr. Folkman's War contains many valuable insights including how to: Raise children to be outstanding people; be an astute observer about nature to unlock new lessons; pioneer in a new field of science; and be persistent about something important. When the history of medicine in the twentieth century is written, Dr. Judah Folkman will be considered one of the most important figures. This book is the most accessible and complete source of information about his remarkable life and accomplishments.

Dr. Folkman's research to date "has found applications in twenty-six diseases as varied as cancer, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, psoriasis, arthritis, and endometriosis." "Ordinarily, researchers working in any of these fields do not communicate with each other."

Angiogenesis looks at the way that capillaries are formed in response to the body's biochemistry to help and harm health. Tumors...

inspiring
I'm in med school, and I've heard a lot about Dr. Folkman, so I was curious to read why he's so mythologized. Now I know! This is an inspiring book -- it reminded me how hard you have to work, how brilliant you have to be, and how lucky you have to be just to have a CHANCE to make a huge difference. Dr. Folkman was all three. THe author does a real service, too, in explaining the history of cancer research -- not easy to do in an engaging yet substantive way.

The Man Who May Cure Cancer
This is the extraordinary story of an extraordinary man. Dr. Judah Folkman's approach to fighting cancer, long the subject of derision from the medical and research establishment, is finally bearing fruit. Robert Cooke writes beautifully and clearly, combining a scientific biography of Dr. Folkman with an introduction to anti-angiogenesis. Read this book- when Judah Folkman wins the Nobel Prize, you'll know all about him. (A sidebar- a Amazon customer reviewer, who pans the book, is under the impression that it is written by Dr. C. Everett Koop. It is not. He does however, write the introduction, which ends with these words, "In the end, of course, Judah Folkman's beautiful idea has triumphed over the doubters. A few still persist, but their time will come.")

Most Underlined Buyer Review : Wake Up People
You would think that in the twenty-first century people would know better than to blindly trust the medical establishment that is making billions from keeping people sick. And yet, so many have bought into the paternal attitude of the AMA and the FDA. We no longer live in the Dark Ages when people like Galileo were persecuted for making scientific discoveries. It's time to wake up and start exploring and you will find the truth. This book is a good place to start.

The Doctor Who Cures Cancer is the well-written story of a brilliant and compassionate doctor who was able to cure cancer fifty years ago. His methods and the science behind them are thoroughly explored in the book. Then why are we still waging a war on cancer today--and losing? Simple. Follow the money. The medical establishment is making too much by torturing and mutilating cancer patients with chemo, radiation, and surgery. Think the FDA will protect you? No. They're the ones jailing and condemning people like...

It is incredible, I am without words
There are places around the world where cancer and other "incurable" illnesses are cured. I've seen it with my own eyes many times. What a pity that in the US, the most developed country in the world, people are so blind at what's happening around them!

A Clear Mind Opening Book!
This "how to" book is a life-saving breakthrough in cancer treatment -- or rather in cancer CURES -- because that is the crux of Dr. Revici's research and life's work as skillfully recounted by Kelley Eidem.

Can diet alone effect a genuine cure? Yep. Pretty much so.

Has Dr. Revici been unreasonably reviled by Establishment Medicine? Yep. Viciously so.

Does the American Cancer Society really have a clue about cancer CURES? Nope. Not a whisper!
Further, ACS gets into fits over non-existent "side effects" imagined by them as a result of Dr. Revici's practically non-invasive treatments. (Silly me. I thought the radiation, chemotherapy and surgery recommended by this august group actually made one a bit uncomfortable! Have I been misinformed?)

As I was reading this I was vaguely reminded of Jonas Salk. (I'm barely old enough to remember the family discussions and too old to have gotten the vaccine early enough, though I came...
