I'm not sure why the Hay diet isn't more popular in North America. (Maybe it's the name. Don't worry, Hay is the name of the doctor who created it, not a suggested menu item!) This book describes the principles of food combining according to the Hay plan, and provides food lists and sample recipes. It's simpler and easier to follow than recent American variations, such as Fit for Life and the Beverly Hills Diet. (It's interesting to note that the "new, updated" Fit for Life guidelines are much closer to the information in this book.) On this diet, you can eat as much as you want of any natural, unrefined foods. The catch is that you need to avoid eating "incompatible" combinations, such as meat and grains, at the same meal. You're encouraged to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and avoid sugar, white flour products, and hydrogenated fats. I don't see how a nutritionist could find fault with this, even if they think the "incompatible"...

The original "Bible" for Food Combiners, this book gives one of the most comprehensive and convincing explanations of Dr William Howard Hay's food combining plan. With a resounding endorsement from Sir John Mills (a follower of the Hay Plan since 1942, and great advertisement for it!) in the foreword.

The book explains clearly how food combining is based on the premise "don't mix foods that fight". According to Dr Hay, the foods that fight are mainly concentrated proteins and starches. Our digestive system, says Dr Hay, is set up to deal quite separately with proteins and starches. When eaten together, neither is fully digested. Simply by keeping proteins and starches for separate meals, this book claims, you will feel the benefits of more complete digestion. I have been struggling to put more vegetables and raw foods into my diet for years. I just can never commit for the long-term. However, this book title intrigued me, so I had to pick it up and see if it could inspire me to renew my goal of eating more veggies and raw foods. I saw this on Martha Stewart and it took me six months to remember to buy it... yum. Money well spent. I was already vegitarian, for 8 years, so I don't remember the exact taste of meatloaf, but even if these recipes aren't exact replicas, they are good. The meatless/soy reuben is delicious and the thousand island dressing does taste exactly like the real except that it's good for you. Worth a try!

All of the recipes in this book look delicious but after having the book for almost a year I have only tried out a few. The reason? Most of the main course recipes take over an hour to prepare. The Not-Meat Loaf, for example, is described as taking over 60 minutes and that doesn't include the time it takes to prepare cooked brown rice and lentils the recipe requires. This maybe fine for Mr. Milken, who can afford his own personal chef, but those of us in the real world need recipes that are not only healthy but quick.

I guess their definition of whole is very broad, but I really didn't want to be using things like mayonnaise and sugar in my cooking. One example of my confusion comes from an anecdote Ivy shares where she sees parents of a toddler fedding the child an organic, all natural cookie and when she goes to read the label she finds a ton of hidden sugar sources in it, her resulting disgust is understandable enough, except that then her cookbook proceeds to have almost every recipe include some form of sugar in it, and we're not even talking organic sugar, c'mon people, I didn't think powdered sugar was a whole food!

Great Recipes
This book is more than a cookbook. It's more like a health book with recipes. With the guidelines the authors provide, an individual should be able to know which recipes out there are healthy, or modify existing recipes to make them healthier. I've only tried one recipe so far, but it was good and the others seem delicious as well. And what makes this book different from other health food cookbooks is that it provides healthy recipes for special occasions such as St. Patrick's Day and Thanksgiving. I don't think the authors had any control over this, but the only thing I would change is I would add pictures of the finished meals. It would help visual people like me.
