My Mother, My Son: A true story of love, determination, and memories...lost Details

My Mother, My Son illustrates the power of love and a cruel twist of fate. A son who came from a struggling family that had little means was able to fulfill his mother’s lifelong dream to be successful, a “big shot” with all the status and trappings that entailed. Little did they know that her dream would end with a disease that had become an integral part of his livelihood. As Dwayne Clark became a successful executive in the senior living industry, his mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and became a resident of one of his memory care communities. Even though his life’s work dealt with the elderly and memory loss, he still has to come to terms with the diagnosis and the painful realization that his mother would one day forget who he was and the dreams and memories they had shared. This story chronicles the life of the author’s feisty and wildly devoted, single mother, her childhood in India, the memories of a struggling young family and the many life lessons that she taught him along the way. All of the profits from this book are being donated to the Potato Soup Foundation and the Alzheimer's Association.

Most Underlined Buyer Review : An emotional read causing much introspection.
My Mother, My Son is a wonderful read, so much so that I finished it in one sitting. The complexities of the Clark family's lives and relationships as seen through Dwayne's eyes guided me emotionally through each chapter. I found myself relating Dwayne and Colleen's relationship with the love and relationship I had with my own mother. Dwayne did a artful job balancing family history and memories with the pain and progression through the Alzheimer's experience. To be sure, every mother needs to have a child who loves her as much as Dwayne loved Colleen. Thank you, Dwayne, for sharing your intimate memoire, and for giving us tools to help make life richer.

A Compelling Book on a Tough Subject
More than just the warm and honest memoir that it is, My Mother, My Son is a compelling primer for all of us with loved ones suffering through the cruelties of Alzheimer's disease or other age-related dementia. It's also a heart-warming, rags-to-riches story of an eccentric mother and the power of her unfailing belief in her son. The author, himself a well-known expert in caring for the elderly, documents his struggles to care for and honor the mother he loves so deeply. Those struggles are somehow comforting to the rest of us who are fighting the same battles: If it's so hard for a caring and devoted expert, maybe it's not our fault that Mom isn't getting better, maybe we're not alone in our feelings of guilt and frustration. Finally, the author offers invaluable, practical guidelines for families dealing with dementia. My Mother, My Son is a lovely book about a very difficult subject.

Chilling in the truth
I only gave this book three stars because quite honestly it was a bit long and detailed at times. As someone who works with Alzheimers' patients on a regular basis, however, it was spine-tingling how very honest the author was. This is a book that I would recommend to anyone who has had Alzheimer's diagnosed in a family member. We MUST remember that underneath what our parent is still lies the parent that they WERE. This book is marvelous at pointing that out, and understanding the frailties of the psych when dealing with an Alzheimers parent.

Life, Love and LGS: a true story Explanation

This is a true story about my son who has Lennox Gastaut Syndrome and our journey thru life so far. Lennox Gastaut Syndrome is a rare seizures disorder with no cure. It is very hard to control with medication. I describe what we have went thru in the 15 years my son has had it. The Brain surgeries, the diets, the medications, behaivors and everything else that comes along with raising a child with LGS. My hope is to help inform other parents of what things are involved with this awful syndrome. I don't want anyone to not have someone to turn to about this, i want others to know there are people like me and my son who are living this now.

Life,Love and LGS
This is an amazing book!! My 3 year old son also has LGS and I can relate to her story in the beginning. I gives me some knowledge on what I could possibly expect later in years as my angel gets older. You should read this book weather ur child has LGS or not. Help spread the word about epilepsy, epilepsy is not joke!!! Thank you Georgia for this book I love it!!!

Georgia has such love for her son!
I love this book, because it truly shows Georgia's love for Steven. The instincts Georgia has, and decisions she has to make for Steven are a testimonial to her devotion to her son. Reading of the trials and tribulations that they have incurred along this rocky road of LGS, has given insight as to what there life is really like. My heart goes out to both Georgia and Steven!

I received this product about 5 days back and am extremely happy with the item, So far so great. Battle for Grace: A Memoir of Pain, Redemption and Impossible Love Description

Battle for Grace is about a seven-year-old girl who sees Funny Girl and has a dream. To act, to dance and to sing.

It's also about how she becomes a woman whose life is virtually destroyed by a crippling mystery illness and how she fights the institutions that failed her. A woman who has lived an almost impossible love story that began before her illness. Somehow she and the man who is her reason for living, her caregiver and her partner in life have managed to stick together for more than thirty difficult years.

Battle for Grace tells how she reinvents herself and turns tragedy into triumph for millions of women worldwide. At the same time, she transforms her life into something more beautiful and meaningful than her original dreams of stardom. Ballerina Cynthia Toussaint's promising career ended abruptly when a rehearsal injury that caused excruciating pain remained undiagnosed for thirteen years. This left her bedridden for a decade, unable to speak for five of those years and often reduced to uncontrolled violence.

Throughout all of this, Toussaint's claims of pain were discounted by her HMO as being all in her head--a frequent occurrence with women and their doctors. Many people with her illness--sometimes called the Suicide Disease--take their lives instead of contending with the pain. Toussaint's story is about her refusal to be a victim. She not only fought to survive, she has taken on the role of activist and aggressively challenges the HMOs and pharmaceutical companies that put profit ahead of patient care. Wheelchair bound, she founded a nonprofit and entered the political arena as an advocate for women in pain.

In the process, Toussaint has become a media magnet. She has appeared on more than seventy-five local and national television shows and been featured in over 200 news stories. Her list runs the gamut from community newspapers to The New York Times, Newsweek and ABC World News with Diane Sawyer.

Toussaint's memoir takes the reader on the roller coaster life of a woman who sees every no as a future yes. Despite pain, setbacks, abuse and betrayal, she holds her ground, finding in the process the spotlight she'd always coveted. And a deeper meaning in life than she ever expected.

Most Underlined Buyer Review : Undaunted
I've just finished reading this story of undaunted spirit penned by my younger sister, Cynthia. Undaunted in the sense that despite an onslaught of ruthless, seemingly endless horrible events visited upon her, Cynthia never lost the sense of her true self, her abilities, or her value in the world. Battle For Grace is not a particularly easy read. I had to put it down several times. Some of the passages are quite horrifying and unsettling, especially for me. I am no objective reader; I lived through much of the horror that Cynthia so bravely exposes.

In classic literary form, the book takes the reader on a descent; this is of course Cynthia's intractable and mysterious illness, made worse by a dishonest medical establishment trying to avoid paying for the treatment that could have healed her. Cynthia takes you into the pit with her, with the heartrending commentary of John, her partner. But, also in classic literary form, Cynthia takes the reader along for the ascent of her...

French Kids Eat Everything is a wonderfully wry account of how Karen Le Billon was able to alter her children’s deep-rooted, decidedly unhealthy North American eating habits while they were all living in France.

At once a memoir, a cookbook, a how-to handbook, and a delightful exploration of how the French manage to feed children without endless battles and struggles with pickiness, French Kids Eat Everything features recipes, practical tips, and ten easy-to-follow rules for raising happy and healthy young eaters—a sort of French Women Don’t Get Fat meets
Food Rules.

Most Underlined Buyer Review : Just What I Was Looking For!
I just finished reading this book and I loved it. I bought this after finishing 'Bringing Up Bebe', and I wanted more tips on how to get my child to enjoy more foods. I also wanted to change my own food habits, so this was perfect for me. I hate how I eat and I hate how the way my family eats has affected their health negatively. I am still young and in good health and I want it to stay that way. I don't enjoy eating and food much, because I like to eat and just move on to the next thing as fast as possible. I now realize that by taking my time to eat and to cook healthy meals, I can de-stress and enjoy my life more. Slowing down to enjoy food and family is just what I needed.

I am sure that a lot of people (especially Americans) will probably not give this book as good a review as it deserves, because there are a couple of parts in the book that pretty much say that everything about the way Americans eat (as well as some other Europeans and Canada) is so very wrong. I am...

Excellent until move back to North America
I purchased this book after I read the book description regarding how the author integrated what she learned in France into her family's lives back in North America. Having recently moved from Paris, expecting our first baby, and scared to death of raising my child in our current American food culture, I really was hoping to glean some ideas on what to do to keep my child away from American junk food, fast food, processed food, and from snacking all the time as I see children do here. I thought the book was terrific the whole time they were in France - it reinforced what I had learned there and reminded me of all the things I do want to do with my children/family. However, I found their move back to North America less than inspiring and overall not helpful. The author resumed allowing her children to snack throughout the day at school and did nothing regarding the lack of time her children had to eat in school and their poor lunch selections. She also started purchasing processed...

French Kids Eat Everything - But not just anything and not just anytime or anywhere
After a decade of French and France bashing, the pendulum seems to be swinging in the other direction with a range of new books extolling the magic of the French art de vivre. After Pamela Druckerman's coquettish "I'm not even sure I like it here" but nonetheless rose-tinted view of life in France (read, Paris), it's refreshing to read Karen Bakker Le Billon's earnest attempt to understand the French way of educating bébé at the table. While Druckerman bears and rears her children in Paris and in a French cultural context from conception, Le Billon moves with her French husband and two small children, ages two and six at the time, from the ultra-permissive, child-centered food culture of North America (Vancouver, to be exact) to the authoritarian and comparatively rigid environment of Brittany.

The Le Billon grandparents are horrified by the manners and eating habits of their Franco-Canadian grandchildren. From their French family's perspective the children...
