My Mother, My Son: A true story of love, determination, and memories...lost Details

My Mother, My Son illustrates the power of love and a cruel twist of fate. A son who came from a struggling family that had little means was able to fulfill his mother’s lifelong dream to be successful, a “big shot” with all the status and trappings that entailed. Little did they know that her dream would end with a disease that had become an integral part of his livelihood. As Dwayne Clark became a successful executive in the senior living industry, his mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and became a resident of one of his memory care communities. Even though his life’s work dealt with the elderly and memory loss, he still has to come to terms with the diagnosis and the painful realization that his mother would one day forget who he was and the dreams and memories they had shared. This story chronicles the life of the author’s feisty and wildly devoted, single mother, her childhood in India, the memories of a struggling young family and the many life lessons that she taught him along the way. All of the profits from this book are being donated to the Potato Soup Foundation and the Alzheimer's Association.

Most Underlined Buyer Review : An emotional read causing much introspection.
My Mother, My Son is a wonderful read, so much so that I finished it in one sitting. The complexities of the Clark family's lives and relationships as seen through Dwayne's eyes guided me emotionally through each chapter. I found myself relating Dwayne and Colleen's relationship with the love and relationship I had with my own mother. Dwayne did a artful job balancing family history and memories with the pain and progression through the Alzheimer's experience. To be sure, every mother needs to have a child who loves her as much as Dwayne loved Colleen. Thank you, Dwayne, for sharing your intimate memoire, and for giving us tools to help make life richer.

A Compelling Book on a Tough Subject
More than just the warm and honest memoir that it is, My Mother, My Son is a compelling primer for all of us with loved ones suffering through the cruelties of Alzheimer's disease or other age-related dementia. It's also a heart-warming, rags-to-riches story of an eccentric mother and the power of her unfailing belief in her son. The author, himself a well-known expert in caring for the elderly, documents his struggles to care for and honor the mother he loves so deeply. Those struggles are somehow comforting to the rest of us who are fighting the same battles: If it's so hard for a caring and devoted expert, maybe it's not our fault that Mom isn't getting better, maybe we're not alone in our feelings of guilt and frustration. Finally, the author offers invaluable, practical guidelines for families dealing with dementia. My Mother, My Son is a lovely book about a very difficult subject.

Chilling in the truth
I only gave this book three stars because quite honestly it was a bit long and detailed at times. As someone who works with Alzheimers' patients on a regular basis, however, it was spine-tingling how very honest the author was. This is a book that I would recommend to anyone who has had Alzheimer's diagnosed in a family member. We MUST remember that underneath what our parent is still lies the parent that they WERE. This book is marvelous at pointing that out, and understanding the frailties of the psych when dealing with an Alzheimers parent.
