The Inside Tract: Your Good Gut Guide to Great Digestive Health Details

In The Inside Tract, a comprehensive plan for overcoming common digestive ailments, you’ll learn how a simple regimen of dietary changes, supplements, and a 7-step lifestyle modification program can help heal intestinal problems, like gastroesophageal reflux disease and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

For many centuries, ancient, ayurvedic, and traditional Chinese medicine have identified the gut as the center of health and wellness, but it has been largely downplayed by modern Western medicine. In The Inside Tract, Gerard E. Mullin, a leading internist, gastroenterologist, and nutritionist at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and Kathie Madonna Swift, a registered dietitian and culinary nutritionist, show that good digestive health is vital to overall wellness.

Studies have shown that over half of the 90 million Americans suffering from digestive disorders such as IBS, GERD, celiac disease, and gluten sensitivity are actively looking for alternative ways to address these ailments. Advocating a regimen of dietary changes, supplements, detoxification, and a 7-step lifestyle modification program, Mullin and Swift show how food can be used as medicine to heal intestinal problems.

Using the questionnaire provided, readers will be able to determine their own unique Gastrointestinal Point System (GPS) and design an individualized plan to get themselves on the right “tract” to digestive wellness and vibrant health.

Most Underlined Buyer Review : Excellent resource!!!
Several years ago our son experienced a horrific health challenge and during this time I read every book available dealing with gastrointestinal issues. I recently read this book and I found it to be the most helpful by far. It was very easy to read and it was extremely helpful in identifying symptoms and possible disorders. More importantly the book also includes an action plan that the reader can follow in order to regain their health. The suggested diet is simple to follow and easy to personalize. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in improving their health.

Great information for dealing with auto immune disorders and living a healthy life
I wanted to take the time to thank the authors for writing this book. I was diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis a couple of months ago. The doctor told me that diet/nutrition would NOT make a difference. Fortunately, I didn't believe this and I had support from a couple of friends. I also received good direction concerning supplements from a nutritionist at a local natural food store here in Denver. Finally, I came across this book at a local book store, purchased it, read it, and went on the elimination track 2 plan while continuing with the supplements. I saw results immediately and within a month was symptom free. It has been another month and all is still going well. I feel much healthier than I have in many, many years. Thanks again. The book is filled with easy to read and understand information that explains how the digestive system and auto immune system function. The recipes are easy to read and follow. I highly reccomend this book for anyone looking to live a long and...

Very simplistic, but a good start for most
Perhaps my expectations were too high given the positive reviews, but I wasn't crazy about this book. I wish the first part of the book had been expanded to explain more about the digestive tract anatomy and interactions with the rest of the body. I found the second part of the book rather simplistic. The author's gut-healing protocol included eliminating most processed foods from the diet and undergoing a food elimination diet, if necessary, to identify additional triggers. Supplements were also recommended for different conditions. The author stressed an organically-grown local, seasonal, plant-based diet.

A few things that bothered me about his recommendations:

- Nutritional focus should include organic, grass-fed, hormone-free, and antibiotic-free animal products.

- Grains really aren't very good for you. They're nutrient-poor and converted to sugar in the body. In addition, many people are gluten-intolerant and grain-sensitive. There...
