Parenting Girls on the Autism Spectrum: Overcoming the Challenges and Celebrating the Gifts Description

Parents of girls on the autism spectrum often wish their daughters were celebrated for their talents, rather than discouraged for their differences. They recognise that their children's unique natures may make them distinctive in some ways, but resent labels such as 'disabled' and 'disorder' being applied to their daughters. This book is a celebration of all the wonderful and unexpected gifts that having daughters on the autism spectrum can bring to your life. Each chapter explores a topic of concern, offering encouragement and guidance on common issues such as school, friendships, meltdowns, special gifts, family relationships, therapies and interventions. Having daughters on the spectrum presents unique and rewarding challenges and this book is packed with friendly advice and real life examples from a mother who has experienced it all first hand. The hopeful perspective given in this book is guaranteed to offer much appreciated comfort to parents, grandparents and family members. It will provide educators and anyone who cares for girls on the spectrum with an insight into what life is like for these extraordinary girls and their parents.

Most Underlined Buyer Review : A must read for special educators!
As a special education teacher in public schools, I found this book to be a must-read for anyone in the field of education. Although it's written for parents of girls with Autism, it was a real eye opener and gave me a whole new perspective on girls (and boys) with Autism. It verified some of which I already knew, and it taught me a ton more. I'm not sure I will ever sit in a CSE meeting again and not think about Eileen's experiences while fighting to devise an appropriate IEP for her girls! I will be passing this book on to the teachers I work with.

Inspiring for ALL parents
What a terrific combination of maternal anecdotes about raising children on the Autism Spectrum and intelligent, yet understandable research. Eileen Riley-Hall has written a loving account of her personal journey and interposed it with solid and timely research into educational protocols that should be explored by all parents of children who need special attention from teachers and their families. Her stories about her two beautiful daughters and their triumphs are especially compelling and situated within realistic advice for parents who are adrift within the maze of confusion about "diagnosis" and what it might mean for them and their children. Finally, someone has written something inspirational about living with Autism and how a parent's love for their children transcends any clinical "label." Bravo!!Parenting Girls on the Autism...

Incredibly insightful and well written
A must read for not only educators, but for everyone. The author gives you a view into the world of autism that you could not get anywhere. A beautifully written book.
